Looking to get started in the wonderful world of turn based RPGs but you're not sure where to start? We've done some research and tailored a list with some pros, cons and information so you can make an informed decision as to where to start! Let's get into it.

Geneforge Mutagen:

A wizard in a red robe summons a lizard looking creature in a purple orb with the title of the game across the screenshot

Geneforge is a wonderfully unique game created by the indie studio Spiderweb Software. You take the role of a Shaper apprentice stranded alone on a deserted island, Shapers are basically magicians capable of creating lifeforms from a type of mana called essence. There are three classes to choose from each with various playstyles, some more oriented towards combat and others magic and espionage focused.

You can choose to build your character how you see fit with a wide array of skills and equipment. Your choices throughout the game do matter and you're often faced with difficult moral choices. We loved our time with this game and there's four more games in the series if this strikes your fancy!

Pros: Unique setting and mechanics, high player agency, deep replayability

Cons: Dated UI & graphics, slower combat pace, steep learning curve depending on difficulty

Final Fantasy IV:

The final fantasy characters stand on a cliff overlooking a serene and lush valley

Many fans of the Final Fantasy series agree that IV is the perfect starting point for newcomers, the reasons being that it offers a great introduction to the class system, has a strong story and robust battle system.

Compared to the older entries in the series it doesn't feel as dated and the story is relatively short, not to say you'll finish it in one sitting but you also won't have to worry about dedicating a large chunk of your time in order to see those credits roll. Fans also state that the musical score of the game is really solid and helps to immerse you in the story.

Pros: Classic JRPG experience, active time battle system, memorable characters & music

Cons: Linear progression, random encounters can become frustrating, older versions can have grindy pacing

Paper Mario:

Everyone knows about Mario, the Italian plumber who saves the princess from the clutches of Bowser every time. This time around it's been revamped to have engaging RPG like combat and satisfying real time elements. The writing is also fairly witty with engaging world building and memorable characters.

If you're looking for something to kick back and relax to then this game should fit the bill, it's distinctive paper aesthetic makes for an intriguing experience that sets it apart from other games. The game may look deceptively simple but it can offer you hours worth of engaging and strategic combat.

Pros: Charming art style, interactive turn based combat, light RPG mechanics

Cons: Limited party customisation, low difficulty, minor pacing issues

Expeditions Viking:

The player's party stand in the middle of merchant stalls

The expeditions game series put you in the shoes of explorers and wanderers who usually find themselves in completely new locales that their people have never discovered before, in this setting you play as a Viking who's had to leave their Norse homeland to carve out their destiny in Britain. As the game progresses you gather a team of intriguing characters to join you in your journey and can have a maximum of 6 (including yourself) in your party at any given time.

You're able to make choices as to who you want to be, from a bloodthirsty conquerer to a diplomatic thegn trying to prove yourself as a trustworthy ally to the local Picts and Saxons. You get to choose your skills and build your characters into what works for you while exploring the wilderness, towns, tombs and dungeons of the game.

Pros: Deep tactical combat, branching narrative, interesting historical setting

Cons: Steep early difficulty, clunky inventory and UI, some bugs and stability issues

Persona 3 Reload:

The main character of persona 3 holds their gun with blue flames surrounding them

The Persona games have always held a special place in our hearts as they tell the story of incredibly interesting and believable characters, in this game you play as a transfer student to a new highschool where you soon realise that something is very wrong. At night most people freeze in time and are unaware of the monsters that emerge to roam the city, causing unexplained deaths and problems. You get drafted into a team that fights back against these monsters, mainly spending time inside a massive tower dungeon.

Every night you get to explore deeper and find stronger items, upgrades and materials, however during the day you can spend your time however you see fit, build relationships, sing karaoke, eat at various restaurants and grow your skills to become smarter, braver and more charming which in turn unlocks even more content . The storylines in this game are second to none and you can find yourself easily losing hours just to progress and learn more, we highly recommend this game to both newcomers and veterans of RPG games.

Pros: Stunning visuals and QOL, strong social sim, engaging combat mechanics

Cons: Time management pressure, semi-repetitive dungeon design

We hope you're able to find your next favorite game from this list and wish you the best of luck in your quests. Go well and have a blast!
