Nothing feels quite as good as creating a character that looks and feels exactly like you want them to in a game, we've tailored a list of the best character customisation we could find in CPRG games and laid them out here for your convenience. Let's get into it.

Baldur's Gate 3:

The player character looks off into the distance with two of his party members flanking him

Baldur's Gate 3 took the world by storm when it was fully released back in 2023, the sheer depth of it's customisation options could allow players to create almost any look that they desired. The sheer amount of options is actually a little daunting and it's easy to get lost in the customiser itself spending hours crafting the perfect character.

Luckily for you however if you find that you'd like to update your character as the game progresses or you made a slight mistake and want to fix that you can pop back into the character customisation options from the party camp, all you have to do is find the magic mirror on your map and run over to it, a quick loading screen will pop up before you're back at it, you won't be able to change your characters race or gender however so do try to make a choice you're happy with from the get go.

Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader:

An assortment of rogue trader portraits next to each other

Rogue Trader is a fantastic CRPG from the wonderful team over at Owlcat Games, while not as robust as Baldur's Gate 3 you're still able to make your character appear unique to your desires, your choices include tattoos, augmentations and scars as well as the usual body types, hair and beards.

The game tries it's best to provide you with a baseline of your chosen character portrait but you're not forced to be confined to that, you can make them look as human or cybernetic as you would like. There's also an option to customise your character again should you make any mistakes by using the vanity in your bedroom once you complete the prologue section of the game.

Pillars Of Eternity:

The pillars of eternity party brandishing their weapons, ready for combat

Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2 are solid games from the minds over at Obsidian, while the customisation options aren't too varied the reason we've placed this on our list is the class system, you can spec your character in a multi-class with many different viable combinations to choose from, this allows players to create a character that is able to perform exactly what they would like, a tanky spellblade isn't outside the realm of reason in the Pillars games.

You're given a fairly broad spectrum of freedom when it comes to making your player character however the only downside for us was that some races have very limited portrait options compared to others!

Divinity Original Sin 2:

The divinity original sin 2 party members stand alongside each other looking directly in front of them

Divinity Original Sin 2's defining feature is the depth of it's character customisation system, you're able to choose from various races including undead and lizardfolk, interesting classes and origins. Each of these choices significantly alter your playthrough and experience and improve the overall replayability of the game.

The origin characters, which can still be completely customized each offer an interesting hook and personal story, have their own reasons for being where they are and desires to fulfill. You still get tags to further customise who they are, such as scholar, noble or outlaw which can change your playthrough even further. All origin characters that you don't pick will become your companions throughout the game, it all feels incredibly interconnected and weaves the story together beautifully.

Honorable mentions include Pathfinder Kingmaker a strong fantasy CRPG, Wasteland 3 a post apocalyptic fallout-esque title and Dragon Age Origins, known for it's dark fantasy universe. These games all offer fantastic character customisation options too, so go forth and make some unique heroes, they're just waiting for you to tell their stories.
